The caspase pathway refers to a series of tightly regulated molecular events involving the activation of caspases, a family of cysteine proteases that play essential roles in programmed cell death (apoptosis) and inflammation. Caspases are synthesized as inactive zymogens (procaspases) and become activated in response to specific cellular signals, leading to the controlled dismantling of cellular components. The pathway encompasses the intrinsic (mitochondrial) and extrinsic (death receptor) pathways, both converging on executioner caspases to induce apoptosis.
