Overview

Catalase is a ubiquitous enzyme found in nearly all living organisms exposed to oxygen. Its primary function is to catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), a potentially harmful byproduct of metabolic processes, into water (H₂O) and oxygen (O₂). This reaction protects cells from oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS).
