Catalytic antibody 17E8 is a monoclonal antibody engineered to function as an enzyme, specifically catalyzing the hydrolysis of phenyl esters. It was elicited using a phosphonate transition-state analog, which induces an active site complementary to the high-energy tetrahedral intermediate of the reaction (Zhou et al., 1994; Science 265:1059-1064).
