Overview

Catecholamine release is the process by which catecholamines—primarily adrenaline (epinephrine), noradrenaline (norepinephrine), and dopamine—are secreted from nerve terminals or chromaffin cells into the extracellular space or bloodstream. This process is central to the body's response to stress, regulating cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological functions. It occurs primarily via exocytosis, triggered by neuronal stimulation and calcium influx. Regulation is tight, involving neuronal control, hormonal modulation, autocrine feedback, and ion channel activity. Action is terminated by reuptake and enzymatic degradation. Abnormalities in catecholamine release are implicated in various conditions, including pheochromocytoma, hypertension, and Parkinson's disease.
