An adrenergic neuron is a nerve cell that uses catecholamines—primarily noradrenaline (norepinephrine), adrenaline (epinephrine), or dopamine—as its neurotransmitters. These neurons are primarily found as postganglionic fibers in the sympathetic nervous system and in various regions throughout the central nervous system, where they modulate functions like arousal, attention, learning/memory, mood regulation, pain processing, and motor activity control. Activation of adrenergic neurons leads to physiological effects associated with the "fight-or-flight" response, including increased cardiac output, vasoconstriction/vasodilation, bronchodilation, and glycogenolysis/lipolysis. While the neuron itself isn't a direct drug target, the receptors it acts upon are, and dysfunction or pharmacological targeting of adrenergic signaling is implicated in cardiovascular diseases and other conditions.
