Cathepsin

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protease, Cysteine protease, Aspartic protease, Serine protease
01

Overview

Cathepsins are a family of proteases primarily located in the lysosomes of cells. They play essential roles in intracellular protein degradation, energy metabolism, and immune responses. There are approximately 12 different types of cathepsins identified in humans, including cathepsins B, D, L, K, S, V, X, C, and H. Cathepsins are implicated in various diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, bone resorption disorders, and oral diseases, making them potential diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets. Selective inhibitors for specific types of cathepsins are under investigation for clinical use against these pathologies.
