Cathepsin B is a lysosomal cysteine protease belonging to the papain family, encoded by the CTSB gene in humans. It plays a central role in intracellular protein catabolism and is involved in various physiological processes, including antigen processing for immune responses, hormone activation, bone turnover, and tissue remodeling. Cathepsin B also participates in apoptosis regulation and inflammatory responses. Elevated expression or mislocalization has been implicated in several diseases, most notably cancer, where it correlates with tumor invasiveness and metastasis. It is regulated by endogenous inhibitors such as Cystatin-B (CSTB).
