Cathepsin F is a lysosomal cysteine protease belonging to the papain family, encoded by the CTSF gene in humans. It plays a role in intracellular protein degradation and turnover, and is implicated in immune system function as well as various disease states such as cancer, atherosclerosis, and angiogenesis. It functions primarily as an endopeptidase within lysosomes and participates in the degradation of proteins such as MHC class II-associated invariant chain and ApoB-100, as well as processing antigens for immune presentation. Altered activity or mutations of cathepsin F have been linked with several diseases.
