Target intelligence / Profile preview
Cation channel sperm-associated auxiliary subunit beta (CATSPERB) is a sperm-specific integral membrane protein that serves as an auxiliary subunit of the CatSper calcium ion (Ca\(^{2+}\)) channel complex, localized to the principal piece of the sperm tail[1][2][3][11]. The CatSper complex, including CATSPERB, is essential for sperm hyperactivation—a form of motility critical for successful fertilization. The CATSPERB protein helps enable alkalization-activated Ca\(^{2+}\) influx, facilitating sperm movement through the female reproductive tract and penetration of the egg coat[1][2][7]. Absence or dysfunction of CATSPERB or other CatSper subunits leads to impaired sperm function and male infertility. Genetic studies suggest possible associations with bone mineral density and possibly some androgen-responsive tissues, but its decisive function in non-reproductive physiology remains unclear[1]. There are currently no drugs known to specifically target CATSPERB, and its principal human health implication is its essential role in male reproductive competence[1][6][11].
