Target intelligence / Profile preview

Solute carrier family 7 member 2 (SLC7A2)

Target
SLC7A2
Molecular classification
Transporter, Solute carrier family, Cationic amino acid transporter
01

Overview

Solute carrier family 7 member 2 is a membrane transporter protein that mediates the uptake of cationic amino acids, particularly arginine, lysine, and ornithine, across the plasma membrane in a sodium- and pH-independent manner. It plays an essential role in immune cell metabolism, especially in macrophages, serving as a key modulator of inflammatory processes via regulation of nitric oxide and polyamine production. SLC7A2 is inducible and exists in multiple splice isoforms with different substrate affinities. Its expression influences cell proliferation, migration, and immune responses, with implications for cancer progression (notably ovarian and colon cancer), infectious diseases, and inflammatory conditions. Reduced expression of SLC7A2 correlates with increased tumor cell viability, invasion, and poorer prognosis in several cancers.

Mechanism of action

Modulation of transporter function to alter amino acid availability and downstream metabolic pathways (e.g., nitric oxide synthesis in immune responses).

03

Biological functions

Cellular uptake of cationic amino acids (arginine, lysine, ornithine)Regulation of nitric oxide production in immune cellsRegulation of classical and alternative activation of macrophagesModulation of inflammation and immune responses
04

Disease associations

CancerInflammationImmune-related disordersInfectionScleromalacia perforansLysinuric protein intolerance
05

Safety considerations

Non-specific alteration of amino acid transport could disrupt normal metabolism or immune cell functionTargeting may affect both tumor and normal immune/inflammatory responses, complicating therapeutic selectivity
06

Interacting drugs

No approved drugs directly target SLC7A2, but its role in amino acid transport and related pathways is relevant in diseases treated with immunomodulators or cancer therapeutics
07

Biomarkers

Downregulation is associated with poorer prognosis in ovarian cancerSLC7A2 expression levels as a potential diagnostic/prognostic marker in ovarian cancer and possibly colon cancer
