Cetrimide is a cationic surfactant mixture, primarily composed of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), cetrimonium bromide (CTAB), and laurtrimonium bromide (DTAB). It acts by disrupting microbial cell membranes through electrostatic interactions with negatively charged components, leading to increased permeability and cell death. It is used as an antiseptic/disinfectant in wound cleaning and topical formulations and has experimental uses in inhibiting endocytosis.
