Overview

Catsper channel auxiliary subunit tau (CATSPERT) is a membrane-associated auxiliary component of the CatSper calcium channel complex in sperm cells, encoded by the C2CD6 gene[1][3]. CATSPERT contains a C2 domain and is crucial for proper localization and targeting of the CatSper channel to the flagellar membrane, thereby enabling the regulation of Ca²⁺ signaling nanodomains necessary for sperm hyperactivated motility and male fertility[1]. Although not required for channel assembly, it directs the CatSper complex into quadrilinear domains in developing spermatids and interacts with ciliary trafficking machinery. Loss of function results in defective sperm movement and male infertility, and genetic alterations have been linked to spermatogenic failure and may contribute to the phenotype in certain forms of juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis[1][3].
