CC Chemokine Receptor Type 5

Molecular classification
G-protein coupled receptor, GPCR Class A
01

Overview

CC Chemokine Receptor Type 5 (CCR5) is a G-protein coupled receptor primarily expressed on T cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It plays a central role in immune surveillance and inflammatory responses by directing the migration of immune cells to sites of inflammation through interaction with its chemokine ligands, including CCL3, CCL4, CCL3L1, CCL5, and MCP-2. CCR5 also serves as a critical co-receptor for entry of macrophage-tropic strains of HIV-1. Beyond infectious disease, CCR5 contributes to pathogenesis in inflammatory diseases and cancer, particularly triple-negative breast cancer. Emerging evidence suggests that CCR5 modulates learning/memory processes as well.
