Target intelligence / Profile preview

CD133 antigen (CD133)

Target
CD133
Molecular classification
Pentaspan transmembrane glycoprotein
01

Overview

CD133, also known as Prominin-1, is a pentaspan transmembrane glycoprotein primarily expressed on primitive cell populations such as hematopoietic, neural, and endothelial stem and progenitor cells. While its precise physiological function remains unclear, it plays a role in maintaining plasma membrane architecture and acts as a marker for cancer stem-like cell populations in various solid tumors. Its expression correlates with tumor progression and metastasis and interacts with intracellular signaling pathways such as Wnt and PI3K/Akt. Mutations in PROM1/CD133 are associated with degenerative retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease.
