CD1b molecule

Molecular classification
MHC class I-like molecule, Glycoprotein
01

Overview

CD1b is a membrane-bound glycoprotein that belongs to the group 1 of the CD1 family, which are MHC class I-like molecules. It is encoded by the *CD1B* gene in humans and plays a critical role in presenting lipid and glycolipid antigens to T-cell receptors, particularly on natural killer T-cells and other αβ T-cells. Unlike classical MHC molecules that present peptide antigens, CD1b specializes in presenting self and non-self lipid-based antigens. By presenting diverse lipid antigens—including those derived from pathogens—CD1b-restricted T cells contribute significantly to host defense mechanisms against infections such as tuberculosis. Diseases associated with alterations or dysfunctions involving *CD1B* include follicular dendritic cell sarcoma and non-Langerhans-cell histiocytosis. Additionally, regulatory axes involving miRNAs (e.g., miR‑582/CD1B) have been implicated in dendritic cell function and cancer outcomes.
