Cluster of Differentiation 38 (CD38) is a multifunctional glycoprotein expressed on the surface of various immune cells. It acts as an enzyme catalyzing the metabolism of NAD+ to produce second messengers such as cyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR) and nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP), regulating intracellular calcium release. CD38 also functions in cell adhesion and signal transduction. It is a therapeutic target for multiple myeloma and light chain amyloidosis, with implications in autoimmune diseases, inflammation, and age-related metabolic decline.
