Overview

CD44 antisense RNA 1 (CD44-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA that is transcribed antisense to the CD44 gene, which encodes a cell surface glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion, migration, and tumor progression[1]. CD44-AS1 modulates CD44 expression, likely through RNA-RNA interactions and possibly through ceRNA (competing endogenous RNA) activity, although functional studies specific to CD44-AS1 are currently limited. Altered regulation of CD44 by related antisense lncRNAs has been implicated in cancer progression, cell migration, and inflammation. While there are no direct therapies targeting CD44-AS1, its modulation of CD44 makes it of interest in understanding the gene regulatory networks involved in cancer and inflammatory diseases[1]. If further research identifies critical and unique roles for CD44-AS1 in disease, it may emerge as an indirect therapeutic target or biomarker candidate in the future.
