Overview
CD44 is a transmembrane glycoprotein that functions as a cell surface adhesion receptor with diverse roles in cellular processes. It is involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, immune system functions, and neurological functions. Its principal ligand is hyaluronic acid (HA), but it can also interact with osteopontin, collagens, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and fibrin. CD44 is highly expressed in many cancers and regulates metastasis, making it a potential therapeutic target.
