CD46, also known as Membrane Cofactor Protein (MCP), is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that regulates the complement system and serves as a receptor for several pathogens. It is expressed on all nucleated human cells and plays a crucial role in protecting cells from autologous complement attack and modulating immune responses. Dysregulation of CD46 is implicated in diseases such as atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome and cancer metastasis.
Acts as a cofactor for complement factor I-mediated cleavage/inactivation of C3b and C4b; serves as a receptor for pathogens.
