CD53 molecule pseudogene is a nonfunctional segment of DNA that has sequence similarity to the CD53 functional gene but carries disabling mutations (such as frameshifts or premature stop codons) that prevent the production of a functional protein product. Pseudogenes like this can arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition and are typically considered "junk DNA," although in rare cases pseudogenes may have regulatory effects. The CD53 functional gene encodes a tetraspanin family cell surface glycoprotein involved in immune system signaling, but the pseudogene version does not produce the protein nor serve as a direct drug or therapeutic target[1][5][10][3].
