Overview

CD63 antisense RNA 1 (CD63-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA that encodes a mitochondrial-localized, amyloid-like motif–containing microprotein referred to as CEAM. Expression of CD63-AS1 and its microprotein product has been identified in human heart tissue, particularly cardiomyocytes. CEAM is unique in that it forms protease-resistant aggregates within mitochondria and can disrupt mitochondrial bioenergetics, triggering mitochondrial stress responses. Overexpression of CEAM in animal models impairs cardiac function, but elevated expression during pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy may play a protective modulatory role by dampening gene expression associated with pathological remodeling. CD63-AS1 and CEAM represent a novel class of microprotein-generating non-coding RNAs, offering new mechanistic insight into mitochondrial function and stress adaptation in the heart, but they are not established as conventional therapeutic targets.
