CD79a, also known as Igα or MB-1, is a membrane glycoprotein essential for B cell development and function. It forms a heterodimer with CD79b and associates with membrane immunoglobulins to form the B cell antigen receptor (BCR) complex. Upon antigen binding, the ITAM motifs in its cytoplasmic tail mediate signal transduction. It is a potential target for cancer therapy research due to its restricted expression pattern on malignant versus non-malignant tissues. Mutations can result in agammaglobulinemia type 3.
