CD8+ T cell activation via cross-presentation refers to the process by which certain professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs), primarily dendritic cells (DCs), present extracellular (exogenous) antigens on major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC I) molecules to naive CD8+ T cells. This mechanism is distinct from the classical pathway, where endogenous antigens are presented on MHC I, and is essential for initiating cytotoxic immune responses against pathogens that do not directly infect APCs, as well as for anti-tumor immunity.
