CDAN1-interacting nuclease 1 (CDIN1, also known as C15orf41) is an essential and ubiquitously expressed protein that interacts with Codanin-1 (CDAN1) to form a cytosolic complex. CDIN1 is predicted to act as a nuclease, involved in DNA repair and possibly in DNA replication through correction of replication errors. The CDAN1-CDIN1 complex also incorporates histone chaperones ASF1A and ASF1B, implicating a role in chromatin regulation. Mutations in CDIN1 are causative for congenital dyserythropoietic anemia type I (CDA-I), a rare hereditary disease characterized by defective erythropoiesis, anemia, and nuclear abnormalities in erythroblasts. The precise molecular function of human CDIN1 is still under investigation and no natural physiological nucleic acid substrates have been conclusively identified. CDIN1 is essential for viability, as knockout is embryonically lethal in animal models. There are no therapeutic agents that currently target CDIN1 directly.
