Overview

CDC42 intronic transcript 1 (CDC42-IT1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the intronic region of the CDC42 gene locus. Unlike the protein-coding CDC42 gene, which encodes a small Rho-family GTPase involved in cell morphology, signaling, migration, and tumorigenesis, CDC42-IT1 does not encode a protein. It is classified as an lncRNA and its biological role is not fully characterized, though it has been reported in some research as possibly regulating gene expression or being implicated in tumor biology. However, there is little to no direct evidence that CDC42-IT1 itself is a validated therapeutic target or biomarker. Most research and therapeutic interest revolves around the CDC42 protein itself, not CDC42-IT1[5][2][3][4]. Key distinction: The major conflation in the literature is between CDC42-IT1 (a non-coding RNA with unclear function) and CDC42 (the well-studied small GTPase, a clear therapeutic and research target). CDC42 is involved in actin cytoskeletal organization, cell cycle, and cancer biology, while CDC42-IT1 is a non-coding gene product with potential, but unvalidated, roles in gene regulation.
