Overview

CDC42 small effector protein 1 (CDC42SE1) is a small scaffold/effector protein that acts downstream of the small GTPase CDC42, a major regulator of cytoskeletal dynamics, cell polarity, and migration[4][1]. CDC42SE1, also known as SPEC1 or SCIP1, is part of the Borg (binder of Rho GTPases) family of proteins, characterized by a CRIB (Cdc42/Rac interactive binding) domain allowing selective interaction with active CDC42[1]. CDC42SE1 likely regulates the actin cytoskeleton by inducing actin filament assembly and modulating cell shape and contractility in various cell types, particularly endothelial and trophectoderm cells[1][4]. Disruption of CDC42SE1 function has been linked to altered cell migration, reduced angiogenesis, and defective cardiac development, suggesting roles in both physiological and pathological processes such as vascular biology and cancer[1]. There are no current reports of CDC42SE1-targeting drugs, nor is CDC42SE1 typically classified as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter; it is best described as a small effector/scaffold protein within the CDC42 signaling pathway[1][4][3].
