CEBPZ opposite strand (CEBPZOS, CEBPZ-AS1) encodes an antisense RNA transcript to the CEBPZ gene and is expressed in various tissues. Emerging limited studies indicate that CEBPZOS may localize to mitochondria and participate in energy metabolism; its function in tumor cells (notably liver cancer) has been linked with mitochondrial activity and possibly tumor growth, though its precise molecular mechanisms remain unclear and little mechanistic data is available. CEBPZOS should not be confused with the protein transcription factor CEBPZ, which is a distinct DNA-binding protein involved in hematopoiesis and tumor suppression. There is insufficient evidence to consider CEBPZOS a canonical druggable target or receptor at this time. The nomenclature is occasionally inconsistent in the literature, and "protein CEBPZOS" is not widely accepted or validated as an official molecular entity. CEBPZOS is not a standard therapeutic target; it is an antisense RNA (possible lncRNA) with very limited functional annotation, a paucity of mechanistic studies, and ambiguity about its role as an independent protein. Most of the well-characterized functions and disease associations pertain to the sense strand gene, CEBPZ (CCAAT/enhancer binding protein zeta), not CEBPZOS.
