Overview

The CEF control peptide pool is a standardized mixture of peptides derived from Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and Influenza virus (Currier et al., 2002). These peptides are specifically selected for their ability to bind to a broad range of common Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) Class I alleles, ensuring recognition by CD8+ T cells in a high percentage of the human population (Mabtech, 2023). In immunological research and clinical diagnostics, CEF is primarily utilized as a positive control in assays such as ELISpot and flow cytometry to verify the functional integrity of T cells and the technical performance of the assay (JPT Peptide Technologies, 2024). Upon presentation by dendritic cells or other antigen-presenting cells, these peptides trigger the release of cytokines like interferon-gamma from memory T cells. While essential for monitoring immune status and vaccine efficacy, the CEF pool is a diagnostic reagent rather than a therapeutic drug target. Its use is restricted to in vitro applications to assess cellular immune responses against viral antigens (NIH, 2021).
