Carboxyl ester lipase (CEL)

Target
CEL
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Type-B carboxyl esterase/lipase
01

Overview

Carboxyl ester lipase (CEL), also known as bile salt-dependent lipase (BSDL) or bile salt-stimulated lipase (BSSL), is a glycoprotein enzyme primarily secreted by the pancreas and mammary gland. CEL plays a crucial role in lipid digestion and absorption, with broad substrate specificity for various lipid molecules including cholesteryl esters, triacylglycerols, phospholipids, and ceramides. Mutations in CEL are associated with Maturity-Onset Diabetes Of The Young type 8 (MODY8) and elevated serum levels are observed during acute pancreatitis.
