Cell Division Associated 1 (CDCA1), also known as NUF2, is a member of the cell division cycle-associated protein family. These proteins play crucial roles in regulating the cell cycle and ensuring proper cell division. High expression levels of CDCA family members, including CDCA1, are significantly linked to tumor development and progression. CDCA1/NUF2 is an essential component of the kinetochore complex, which attaches chromosomes to spindle microtubules during mitosis. It ensures accurate chromosome segregation by stabilizing kinetochore-microtubule attachments. Disruption or dysregulation of CDCA proteins can lead to chromosomal instability—a hallmark of many cancers. Overexpression or aberrant regulation of CDCA proteins has been observed in various tumors. High levels are associated with increased proliferation rates and poor prognosis in several cancer types. Due to their pivotal role in mitosis and frequent overexpression in tumors, members like CDCA1/NUF2 are being explored as potential targets for anti-cancer therapies.
