Overview

Cell division cycle and apoptosis regulator protein 1 (CCAR1), also known as CARP-1, is a predominantly nuclear phosphoprotein that functions as a transcriptional coactivator for several nuclear receptors and tumor suppressor proteins such as p53[2][3]. CCAR1 regulates key cellular processes including cell cycle progression and apoptosis, partly through assembling with coactivator complexes and mediating hormone-dependent transcription. It is implicated in cancer by enhancing growth, survival, or apoptosis of cancer cells in a context-dependent manner, and is directly targeted by emerging small molecules (CARP-1 Functional Mimetics) designed to disrupt its role in cancer cell proliferation and survival[3]. Its expression or activity is relevant as a biomarker and a potential therapeutic target, especially in hormone-dependent and chemotherapy-resistant malignancies[3].
