Cell division cycle-associated protein 5 (CDCA5), also known as Sororin, is a small, evolutionarily conserved phosphoprotein that plays a central role in the maintenance of sister chromatid cohesion from S phase to the onset of anaphase in the cell cycle[1][2][3][4]. Sororin stabilizes the association between the cohesin complex and chromatin, antagonizes the activity of the cohesin release factor Wapl, and is critical for proper chromosome segregation[1][2][4]. CDCA5 is dynamically regulated and is degraded by the anaphase-promoting complex during exit from mitosis[2]. Overexpression of CDCA5 has been associated with several human cancers and is considered a poor prognostic biomarker[2]. CDCA5 is essential for early embryonic development and normal cell proliferation, suggesting that its inhibition may lead to safety concerns or toxicity. There are currently no known drugs that directly target CDCA5; its biological role makes it a potential, but challenging, therapeutic target in oncology[2][4].
