Overview

Cell proliferation and growth is a fundamental biological process characterized by the increase in cell number through the cell cycle and the increase in cellular mass (StatPearls, 2023). While many pharmacological agents are colloquially described as targeting cell proliferation, they technically act by inhibiting specific molecular entities such as cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), DNA polymerases, or signaling proteins like mTOR (PubMed, PMC4462150). Because cell proliferation is also required for healthy high-turnover tissues like the bone marrow and gastrointestinal lining, drugs affecting these processes frequently exhibit significant toxicities such as myelosuppression and mucositis (American Cancer Society). Ultimately, 'cell proliferation and growth' represents a physiological outcome or phenotypic state resulting from the integration of multiple signaling pathways rather than a discrete molecular target (UniProt).
