Overview

Cell growth regulator with EF-hand domain protein 1 (CGREF1) is a calcium-binding, secreted protein containing two EF-hand domains that are both essential for its function[1][6]. It mediates cell-cell adhesion in a calcium-dependent manner and inhibits cellular proliferation in various cell lines, potentially acting as a negative regulator of cell population expansion[1][3][6]. CGREF1 appears to be digested extracellularly by unknown serine proteases, generating hydrophobic bioactive peptides[1]. While it is implicated in cellular growth control and intercellular adhesion, there is no current evidence for its use as a therapeutic target, disease biomarker, or drug interaction partner[1][2][3][6][7].
