Overview

Cell mediated immunity (CMI), also known as cellular immunity, is a branch of the adaptive immune response that does not involve antibodies. Instead, it relies on the activation of specific immune cells—primarily T lymphocytes (T cells), macrophages, and natural killer (NK) cells—to identify and eliminate infected or abnormal host cells. CMI is especially important for defending against intracellular pathogens such as viruses, certain bacteria and fungi, as well as cancerous or transformed cells. Key components include T lymphocytes (Cytotoxic T cells, Helper T cells, Memory T cells), Antigen Presenting Cells (APCs), and Macrophages & NK Cells. The mechanism involves antigen presentation, T cell activation, and effector functions, leading to the elimination of infected or cancerous cells.
