Cell Membrane Osmotic Gradient

Molecular classification
Other (not a molecule, receptor, transporter, or protein)
01

Overview

The cell membrane osmotic gradient describes the difference in solute concentration between the inside and outside of a cell, across the selectively permeable plasma membrane. This gradient drives the passive movement of water (osmosis) to equalize solute concentrations, thereby regulating cell volume and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Disruption in the osmotic gradient can result in cellular dysfunction, including swelling, shrinkage, or lysis, particularly in pathological conditions or with improper fluid balance.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable to this entity; see above

Biological functions

Maintenance of cell volumeRegulation of water balance (osmoregulation)Cellular homeostasis
04

Disease associations

Other (imbalance can contribute to edema, dehydration, or cell lysis, but it is not a direct disease entity)
05

Safety considerations

Not applicable; disruption of the osmotic gradient can cause cell swelling, lysis, or shrinkage, but this is a result of physiological imbalance rather than a drug safety concern directly related to targeting the "gradient" itself
