The cell membrane and its associated proteins constitute the fundamental structural and functional framework of cellular life, acting as the interface between the intracellular and extracellular environments. The plasma membrane is a dynamic phospholipid bilayer that provides a matrix for membrane proteins, which include receptors, transporters, enzymes, and adhesion molecules (StatPearls, 2023). These proteins are responsible for critical biological processes such as signal transduction, ion homeostasis, and nutrient uptake (Cooper, 2000). In a clinical context, a significant majority of FDA-approved drugs target specific membrane proteins to treat diseases ranging from hypertension to malignancy (Overington et al., 2006). However, the broad classification of membranes and proteins as a single entity is too non-specific for drug development. Effective therapeutic intervention requires the identification of specific protein isoforms or membrane components to ensure efficacy and minimize off-target toxicity (NCBI, 2023).
