Overview

Cell migration-inducing hyaluronidase 1 (CEMIP) is a secreted enzyme that binds hyaluronic acid and plays an essential role in the depolymerization of high-molecular-weight hyaluronan within the extracellular matrix[1][2][3][7]. Although its molecular structure does not resemble traditional hyaluronidases, CEMIP collaborates with cellular components to degrade hyaluronan, promoting the remodeling of the extracellular matrix—a function critical in tissue development, inflammation, and wound healing[3][5]. Overexpression of CEMIP is associated with proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of cancer cells, particularly in colon, pancreatic, ovarian, and other cancers[3][5]. CEMIP also influences cell migration, modulates inflammatory and fibrotic responses, and is involved in normal bone development and hearing[1][2][4][6]. High expression or altered activity of CEMIP is considered a poor prognostic biomarker in multiple tumor types, and it is the subject of therapeutic investigation as a novel target to interrupt cancer progression and modulate abnormal ECM dynamics[3][5][1].
