Overview

Cell proliferation refers to the process by which cells grow and divide to produce two daughter cells, resulting in an exponential increase in cell number. This process requires both cell growth (increase in mass and volume) and cell division (formation of new cells), typically occurring together so that average cell size remains constant within the population. It is essential for tissue growth, embryonic development, organ formation, wound healing, and tissue regeneration after injury. Uncontrolled or abnormal regulation of cell proliferation is a hallmark of cancer.
