Cell Cycle Progression

Overview

Cell cycle progression refers to the tightly regulated sequence of events that a cell undergoes to duplicate its DNA, grow, and divide into two genetically identical daughter cells. This process is fundamental for growth, development, tissue repair, and maintenance in multicellular organisms. The eukaryotic cell cycle is divided into four main phases: G1, S, G2, and M. Progression is controlled by cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) partnered with regulatory proteins called cyclins. There are several key checkpoints: G1/S, G2/M, and spindle assembly checkpoint. Disruption or dysregulation can lead to uncontrolled proliferation seen in cancer or failed tissue regeneration.
