Common agents associated with this classification include povidone-iodine, silver nitrate, and various organomercurial compounds used for their antiseptic properties (NIH, 2024). These substances are generally used topically to reduce microbial load on skin or mucous membranes. The lack of specificity often leads to local tissue irritation or toxicity if the agents are absorbed systemically in large quantities (StatPearls, 2023). Consequently, this designation serves as a catch-all for agents whose molecular mechanism is too broad to be attributed to a single protein.
