Cell-surface components and serum proteins is a collective term used in pharmacological databases, such as ChEMBL, to categorize the non-specific targets of broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antiseptic agents (ChEMBL, 2024). Rather than interacting with a single defined receptor or enzyme, drugs in this category typically act via physical or chemical disruption of various proteins and lipids found on the surface of cells or within the blood serum. This can involve mechanisms such as protein denaturation, oxidation of sulfhydryl groups, or halogenation of amino acids (PubChem, 2024). Because this 'target' represents a heterogeneous mixture of thousands of different molecules, it does not meet the criteria for a specific therapeutic target in modern drug development. Common agents associated with this classification include povidone-iodine, silver nitrate, and various organomercurial compounds used for their antiseptic properties (NIH, 2024). These substances are generally used topically to reduce microbial load on skin or mucous membranes. The lack of specificity often leads to local tissue irritation or toxicity if the agents are absorbed systemically in large quantities (StatPearls, 2023). Consequently, this designation serves as a catch-all for agents whose molecular mechanism is too broad to be attributed to a single protein.
