Cellular and microbial proteins and membranes refers to the diverse array of structural and functional molecules that constitute the architecture of both human cells and pathogenic microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and viruses (StatPearls, 2023). This designation is not a specific therapeutic target but a broad category of biological substrates targeted by non-selective agents such as antiseptics and disinfectants (CDC, 2008). These agents, including alcohols and biguanides, work by inducing rapid protein denaturation and disrupting the integrity of lipid bilayers, leading to cell lysis and death (PubMed, 2019). Because these mechanisms do not distinguish between host and microbial structures, their clinical use is largely restricted to topical applications, wound care, and environmental sterilization to prevent infection (NIH, 2022). Systemic use is generally avoided due to the high risk of non-specific cytotoxicity and damage to vital host tissues (Journal of Hospital Infection, 2018).
