Overview

Cellular architecture refers to the intricate spatial arrangement and structural framework of a cell, encompassing the cytoskeleton, organelles, and the plasma membrane (Alberts et al., Molecular Biology of the Cell, 6th ed., 2014). It is a fundamental biological concept rather than a specific therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter (NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms). The primary role of cellular architecture is to maintain physical integrity, facilitate the movement of molecules via intracellular transport, and provide a scaffold for signaling pathways (Fletcher & Mullins, Nature, 2010). In clinical pathology, the disruption of cellular and tissue architecture is a key diagnostic hallmark used to identify malignancies and developmental disorders (StatPearls, Histology, 2023). While the concept itself is not druggable, individual components of cellular architecture—such as microtubules or actin filaments—are frequently targeted by therapeutic agents like taxanes to inhibit cell division (Jordan & Wilson, Nature Reviews Cancer, 2004). Because it describes the collective organization of a cell, it does not possess a singular mechanism of action or a specific profile of interacting drugs in the traditional pharmacological sense.
