Overview

Cellular chromophores are endogenous molecules that possess specific chemical groups capable of absorbing light at particular wavelengths, a property fundamental to various biological processes and medical applications (Anderson & Parrish, 1983). Major biological chromophores include melanin, which protects the skin from ultraviolet radiation; hemoglobin, which transports oxygen in the blood; and cytochrome c oxidase, a key component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (Karu, 2008). In therapeutic contexts, these molecules are utilized as targets for laser and light-based treatments, where the principle of selective photothermolysis allows for the targeted destruction of specific structures like hair follicles, tattoos, or vascular lesions without damaging surrounding tissue (NIH, 2023). Additionally, certain chromophores like porphyrins are central to photodynamic therapy, where they act as photosensitizers that, upon light activation, produce reactive oxygen species to induce cell death in malignant tissues (PubChem, 2024). The study of cellular chromophores is also vital for diagnostic imaging techniques, such as pulse oximetry and autofluorescence spectroscopy, which monitor physiological states based on the absorption and emission profiles of these molecules.
