Because this designation encompasses a wide variety of unrelated mechanisms and does not refer to a single biological entity, it is considered an incorrect or non-specific target in the context of drug discovery and precision medicine (NCBI, 2022). Consequently, it is generally excluded from target-based drug development pipelines and used primarily for clinical management of symptoms or acute toxicities.
