Cellular components of dead or membrane-compromised ocular cells and membranes refers to the exposed intracellular environment and structural debris resulting from damage to the ocular surface epithelium. In a healthy eye, the intact cell membrane and overlying mucin layer act as a barrier to large, hydrophilic molecules; however, in pathological states such as dry eye disease (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) or corneal injury, these barriers fail (Lemp et al., 2007, "The Definition and Classification of Dry Eye Disease"). This target is primarily utilized by ophthalmic diagnostic dyes, most notably lissamine green B and rose bengal, which penetrate compromised membranes to bind with internal structures like the nucleus and cytoplasm (Bron et al., 2015, "Ocular Surface Staining"). While not a traditional therapeutic target for drug intervention, it serves as a critical clinical endpoint for assessing disease severity and monitoring the efficacy of treatments aimed at restoring ocular surface integrity (Wolffsohn et al., 2017, "TFOS DEWS II Diagnostic Methodology report"). The staining patterns produced by interaction with these components help clinicians differentiate between various types of ocular surface disorders and guide therapeutic decisions (Feenstra et al., 1992, "What is being stained by lissamine green?").
