Overview

Cellular components are targeted and damaged through the combined effects of a photosensitizer, light of a specific wavelength, and molecular oxygen, leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This process is central to photodynamic therapy (PDT), a treatment modality used in cancer and other diseases. Major targets include plasma membrane lipids/proteins, cytoskeletal elements (tubulin), ion channels (TRPA1/TRPV1), and signal transduction proteins/pathways (ERK/Akt/EGFR). This results in membrane disruption/inactivation, mitotic arrest/cell cycle disruption, altered ion fluxes/calcium signaling, and modulated growth/survival signaling.
