Cellular DNA polymerases are essential enzymes responsible for synthesizing new DNA strands during cell division and for repairing damaged DNA. They catalyze the addition of deoxyribonucleotides to a growing DNA chain, using an existing strand as a template. These enzymes are crucial for accurate genome duplication and maintenance in all living cells. They are targets for antiviral drugs (targeting viral versions) and have been explored as potential targets in cancer therapy due to their central role in cell proliferation. Inhibitors can block replication selectively in rapidly dividing cells such as cancer cells but must be designed carefully to avoid toxicity from inhibiting normal cellular replication.
