The cellular environment refers to the complex physical and chemical surroundings in which a cell exists, encompassing both the intracellular milieu (cytoplasm) and the extracellular matrix (Alberts et al., 2002). It provides the essential framework for biological processes, including signal transduction, metabolism, and gene expression, by maintaining specific pH, ion concentrations, and nutrient levels (Lodish et al., 2000). In various diseases, particularly cancer, the cellular environment is significantly altered; for instance, the tumor microenvironment is often characterized by hypoxia and acidosis, which can drive disease progression and resistance to therapy (Whiteside, 2008; Anderson & Simon, 2020). While the cellular environment is a critical factor in drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, it is not considered a discrete therapeutic target. Instead, it serves as the context for drug-target interactions, though some modern therapies are designed to be activated by specific environmental conditions like low pH (Mura et al., 2013). Therefore, the term describes a biological setting rather than a specific protein or nucleic acid target.
