Cellular immune function," more accurately termed **cell-mediated immunity** or **cellular immunity**, is not a single molecule, receptor, or canonical drug target. Instead, it refers to a branch of the adaptive immune system that relies on the activity of various immune cells—primarily T lymphocytes (T cells), macrophages, and NK cells—rather than antibodies. This system protects the body by activating antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes that destroy infected or abnormal body cells, stimulating phagocytic activity in macrophages, and releasing cytokines to coordinate further immune responses. Cell-mediated immunity is especially important for defending against viruses, intracellular bacteria, and cancerous transformations within host tissues[1][3]. It involves complex interactions between different cell types rather than a discrete molecular entity. Because "cellular immune function" does not refer to a specific molecule or receptor but rather an entire functional arm of the immune system involving many cell types and signaling pathways, it cannot be classified as a therapeutic target in the conventional sense used for drug discovery or pharmacology[1][3].
